Beauregard Parish Library
Windows 95 Internet Setup

These pages were designed to help you setup a the dial-up networking Internet connection through the Beauregard Parish Library from a computer running the Windows 95 operating system.

1. Click your "Start" button. From here open "Programs", then "Accessories." Do you see a folder labeled "Internet Tools" in your accessories menu?

2. Open your "My Computer" folder from your desktop. Do you see a folder labeled "Dial-Up Networking"?

3. Install Dial Up Networking

4. Once the Dial-Up Networking is installed, open the Control Panel. Then, open the "Network" folder. You should now have a window displaying the installed network components. If you are not on a LAN (local area network), you should remove all items except for:
  1. Dial-Up Adapter
  2. TCP/IP
Make sure TCP/IP is on the list as it is in the graphic below. If it is not,
  • Click the "Add" button.
  • Select "Protocol"
  • Click "Add."
  • On the left side of this screen select "Microsoft" then on the right side select "TCP/IP."
  • Now click the "OK" button.
  • TCP/IP will now be on the bottom of the list of installed components. Verify this, then click "OK."

You will probably be asked to restart the computer at this point.

5. Now that TCP/IP and the Dial-Up Adapter are installed, we are ready to make the first test call.
  • Open the "My Computer" folder.
  • It should now contain a "Dial-Up Networking" icon. Double click this and it will automatically start to make a new connection.
    • If it does not, double click the "Make New Connection" icon
    • The screen will prompt you to type a name for the new connection. Name it whatever you like, "Library" for example.
    • Make sure that the correct modem is selected, then click "Next."
    • Next, enter the Library's modem number 4629420.
    • Once this is done, click "Next."
    • Now click "Finish."

6. The Dial-up Networking folder now contains a "Library" icon.
  • Click on this icon once with your right mouse button
  • Look to be sure the "Library" icon is selected - the bar across the top of the icon will be dark if the icon is selected.
  • Slect "properties" from the menu. If you do not have "properties" on the menu, you probably did not have the "Library" icon selected when you pressed the right mouse button.
  • This will take you to a setup screen labeled "General."
  • Make sure that the phone number displayed is correct (4629420) then click on the "Server Type" button.
  • In the "Advanced options" section you should only check the following items:

  • Now click the button labeled "TCP/IP Settings."
  • You should enter all the information as shown below:
  • Double check the settings in this window, and then click "OK".
  • Verify the settings in the Server Types window and click "OK".
  • Check the settings on the General screen and click "OK" here also.
Note: If you cannot get your system to accept a connection with the Name Server set to Server Assigned, you can enter the following Primary DNS Server: 204.196.62.4 Prefer, however, to leave the Name Server at "Server Assigned"

7. You are now back to the Dial-Up Networking window. This step is not required, but will make connecting to the Library much more convenient for you.
  • Place your mouse pointer over your Library Dial-Up icon
  • Click the left mouse button and hold it down
  • Drag the icon out of the window and onto your desktop.
  • You will be informed that you can not move this item and asked if you want to create a shortcut. Select yes.

Close any open windows on your desktop, and you are now ready to connect to the Library.

How To Use The Dial-up Networking Connection You Have Created.

At this point, you should be able to connect to the Internet
  • Double click on the "Shortcut to Library" icon on your desktop to bring up the "Connect To" screen
  • Enter your username. Use all lower case letters in the username.
  • In the Password box, enter your password in exactly as it is shown on the label you were given when you signed up.
  • You can put a check next to "Save password" to prevent having to enter your password each time you open this window. Be careful with this option; as long as it is checked, anyone with access to your computer can use your Library account
  • Once these settings are correct, click once on the "Connect" button. You should now hear the modem dial and connect to our modems
  • After you are successfully logged on, you should have a small box on your screen displaying how long you've been online. At this point you can open any internet application that you wish to use (Netscape Navigator, E-Mail, etc...).
* Note: Some of individual applications you download may require extra setup. For example, if you download a mail program such as Eudora, you will have to input the name of our mail server into the program itself.

Problem Solving

  • Support Through The Library The ParishWide Information Network is a project of the Beauregard Parish Library, a non-profit public library with limited funding resources. Much of the support for the network comes from grant funds and gifts which cannot be spent for salaries. Project staff are attempting to provide direct support for linking to the Internet and using basic Internet services such as E-Mail and WWW browsing. Resoruces for direct support are very limited. If you have an unusual problem or if you are in need of basic computer instructions, you are encouraged to attend meetings of the Internet User's Group, take part in the training classes regularly scheduled at the library, and look for answers thorough other sources such as books, magazines, web pages, etc., whenever possible.
  • Cannot Install
    • Make sure you have not selected automatic installation. The automatic installation choice cannot be used unless you are dialing the number for one of Microsoft's Internet Service Providers.
  • Install went ok but computer does not seem to be dialing the phone.
    • Check to see if you are getting a dial tone through to the computer.
      • To do this, remove the phone wire connecting the computer modem to the wall jack from the computer.
      • Plug it into a telephone to see if you can hear a dial tone.
      • If you canot hear a dial tone, there is a problem with the jack or phone line feeding the computer.
      • Try connecting to a working wall jack.
    • If you are getting a dial tone on the phone, there may be a problem with the modem or Win95 may not know where the modem is or how to communicate with it. These things will need to be solved in Win95 before you will be able to make an Internet connection with the Library. While the Library cannot provide support for Win95, modems, etc, we will do our best to point you to the correct source for assistance. You may be referred to a book or asked to bring the problem to an Internet User's Group Meeting for a consultation.
  • Install went ok but system refuses password.
    • Make sure you are typing the user name in lower case with no spaces.
    • Make sure you are typing the password exactly as it is shown on the label you got from the library.
    • Check in the Network folder to be sure there is nothing except Dial Up Networking and TCP/IP installed. If you are not connected to a Local Area Network (in an office), you can delete everything else in that folder.
  • A "No DNS" message comes up after you connect. Check in the TCP/IP settings folder to be sure you have the setup shown in step 6. If not, change your setup and try again.
  • Dials, connects, sits there, hangs up is a sequence that can indicate that one of Microsoft's defaults has kicked in. Try this.
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Networking
    • TCP/IP
    • Properties
    • Check the box that disables WINS resolution
    • Save (or whatever) and try again
