Big Bob, Little Bob by James Howe and illustrated by Laura Ellen Anderson

This is a charming and endearing book for kids. There are two boys. First you meet Little Bob. He likes to play quiet games. He likes dolls and to play dress up. Then Big Bob moves in and he likes to play loud games and to tumble with his dog and get dirty. Big Bob soon learns Little Bob does not like to play the same things. So they do things together like Big Bob playing fire engine alongside Little Bob pushing a doll carriage (with his cat inside).

One day when the two Bobs are playing separately yet together a new girl moves in. She sees Little Bob playing dolls and she tells him boys can never play with dolls and Little Bob feels bad. But quickly Big Bob shouts at the new girl and tells her to leave his friend alone and that boys can play with whatever they want. The girl says she likes to play with trucks more than dolls and Big Bob says that is okay.

I think it’s sweet how Big Bob is surprised at what Little Bob likes to play but he learns that it is just what Little Bob likes. The two friends accept each others different play styles and yet retain their own likes and dislikes. And when Big Bob stands up for his little friend it was so touching it brought tears to my eyes. I think this would be great for any child to read or have a parent read to them. It would teach them that we are not all made the same but that is okay.

If Big Bob, Little Bob interests you, feel free to request or check it out. We'll be back next Thursday with a different Staff Pick.
