OMG Shakespeare! [series]

Teens and Pre-teens (and adults!) have a new way to recap some of the finest works in English literature. For a really modern way to read the classics, try them now in the form of emojis!

The OMG Shakespeare series has translated both titles and content of classic tales using slang, emoticons and text talk. For instance Romeo and Juliet becomes YOLO Juliet; Hamlet translates to Srsly Hamlet; A Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth morph into A Midsummer Night #nofilter and Macbeth #killing it, respectively.

These books are now available through your library and are clearly aiming to cater to a younger demographic — certain excerpts are written in the form of smartphone text threads.

While the emoji adaptations are certainly simplifying the historically acclaimed literature, OMG Shakespeare may provide a great way to introduce more difficult content to the younger generation in a way that they find irresistibly appealing.

On the flip side, it is also worth noting that much of the classic dialogue that might be objectionable for younger readers is filtered out of these adaptations. For children who are too young to really read and understand the full content of the classic works, these emoji books and others may be a great introduction and gateway into the world of the classics.

At any rate, this collection provides a unique insight into Shakespearean dramas by transforming them into a format easily recognizable by today’s youth, making them recognizable and relevant.

If OMG Shakespeare interests you, feel free to request or check it out. We'll be back next Thursday with a different Staff Pick.
