Did you know that there is an entire cookbook devoted to bacon? Many people avoid this delicious food because of its reputation as being “unhealthy”. But recently several diet plans including the Atkins and Paleo programs have embraced it due to its high saturated fat content and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as its low carb protein. It will probably never be considered a health food, but it may not be as bad as previously thought.
If you are like the authors of one of the books we received last week and believe that bacon makes everything better, check out Bacon Freak: 50 Savory Recipes for the Ultimate Enthusiast by Rocco Loosbrock, Sara Lewis and Dawn Hubbard. This book shows how to use bacon in new and exciting ways for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and more. It even tells how to cure your own bacon, if you prefer that to buying it at the store. There are tips on how to cook bacon properly on the stove or in the oven or microwave.
And then there are the recipes! Check out: Bacon Weave Chorizo Breakfast Burrito, Candied Bacon, Bacon-Wrapped Fried Ravioli, Creamy Bacon Lasagna, Salted Caramel Bacon Pie Bites and even Bacon Apple Pie Nachos. Some of the dishes sound very unusual, but if you love bacon, and are a little adventurous, there is plenty here to keep you busy.
The book concludes with a section telling about how the bacon phenomenon has swept the country and gives a list of the many bacon-themed festivals that were held last year. There are also bits of “bacon trivia” and a guide to the types of bacon travelers might encounter on their journeys around the world.
