A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle

Once upon a time, when I was a young boy, searching through the Library for the clay tablets with rockets or UFOs on the spine, I found this book. Blue, with two boys and a girl, surrounded by green and black circles, and a gold sticker proclaiming it a Newbery Award Winner, I almost passed it over. But the title seemed so fascinating by itself! Wrinkled time? What could that be about?

I became lost in it very quickly. It's written on a children's level, but it in no way talks down to them. It explores some very strange concepts, but makes them clear in a way that just about anyone can follow. The fourth (and fifth!) dimension, the question of good and evil, whether like and equal are the same, and so many other incredible ideas just pour off the pages.

This book is perfect for young children. It is also a good one for parents to sit down and read with their children, to help them answer some of the questions it raises, and explain things that might scare them. I know IT and The Darkness certainly worried me for a while! Written in the early 1960s, it retains a charm that leads adults who read it as children to still be able to reread and enjoy it. There is a strong spiritual thread that runs through it, and its sequels, but it steers away from being preachy and dogmatic.

It's just a classic, in the truest sense of the word, that has well stood the test of time. Give it a try - the Library has copies in paperback and playaway audiobook formats, as well as the Disney Made-For-TV movie.

If A Wrinkle In Time interests you, feel free to request or check it out. We'll be back next Thursday with a different Staff Pick.
