It’s a new year and many people are trying to make lifestyle changes to become healthier. Some may be considering changing their diets. If you are one of those interested in exploring a vegetarian or even vegan diet, we received some new books this week that might help.

Check out Meatless in Cowtown: A Vegetarian Guide to Food and Wine Texas-Style by Laura Samuel Meyn and Anthony Head. These two often found themselves the lone vegetarians at a table of carnivores but they never let that deter them from cooking and eating the foods they loved. After moving to meat-loving Texas, they compiled this book of their favorite Texas-inspired flavorful dishes – minus the meat. Included are Frito Pie, Enchiladas, Spicy Tortilla Soup, and many more. They also show how to pair each dish with the perfect wine or cocktail.

The Good Karma Diet: Eat Gently, Feel Amazing, Age in Slow Motion by Victoria Moran takes healthy eating a step farther by showing the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. According to the author, the secret to looking and feeling great is to treat our planet and all of its inhabitants well. Included are the stories of many people who have gone vegan and reaped “good karma” in all aspects of their lives. There is information on the health benefits of a plant-based diet, but the author also stresses the psychological and spiritual benefits from choosing not to harm other living creatures.
