Behind the gates of Gomorrah : a year with the criminally insane by Stephen B. Seager, MD

Dr. Stephen Seager spent a year in Napa State Hospital, residence of those declared “Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.” From his harrowing first day until his disappointing departure, Dr. Seager’s time as a young psychiatrist at the hospital filled him with anxiety over the well-being of the medical professionals who attempted to care for those who occupied the institution. He also describes his awe at the same professionals’ willingness to risk everything up to their lives in order to care for their patients.

This is not a read for the squeamish; it is, however, a strangely inspiring book about the tenacity of dedicated medical professionals. You can check out Behind the Gates of Gomorrah at your Beauregard Parish Library.

If Behind the Gates of Gomorrah interests you, feel free to request or check it out. We'll be back next Wednesday with a different Staff Pick.
