Love & Mercy [DVD]

Love & Mercy is a biopic of the life of Brian Wilson, founder and creative genius of the 1960's rock band The Beach Boys, and his descent into mental illness and rise back out.

I'll have to admit that I've never really been a huge fan of The Beach Boys, but will also admit that a lot of their hits were catchy and fun. "Surf City", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Surfin USA", and "I Get Around" to name a few. I've known that founder Brian Wilson suffered from mental illness, but never knew that the condition pretty much ruined his career and also his life. The movie is told in two parts of his life, the 60's when the decent into the illness took full effect and the 80's when he began the climb out, both interchanging throughout. It was shortly after their biggest hit, "Good Vibrations", which Wilson called his "Symphony to God", utilizing the voices in his head and putting them to music, totally lost it and went into seclusion and lost just about everything. The movie is raw, fun, emotional, but worth a watch. I'll never listen to a Beach Boys song again the same way after seeing the movie, and I have a greater respect for the music knowing the story behind it.

Whether you're a fan of The Beach Boys or not, I think you'll appreciate this tale of a musical genius and his descent into mental illness and eventual climb out through love and mercy.
