Popular author John Grisham’s new book arrived this week. Fans of his many legal thrillers should enjoy Rogue Lawyer. It is the story of Sebastian Rudd, who is not a typical lawyer. He doesn’t have an office other than his customized van. He doesn’t have a staff other than his driver who doubles as his bodyguard. Sebastian needs a bodyguard because he defends clients that other lawyers will not touch and makes many powerful people angry. His clients are not nice people, but he believes that everyone deserves a fair trial and he will do whatever it takes to make sure justice is served.
The book is divided into several sections, each one a different case. Sebastian’s clients include a young, drug-addled, tattooed man who is rumored to be in a satanic cult and has been accused of brutally molesting and murdering two little girls, a vicious crime lord on death row, and a homeowner who shot the SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his home. The thread that ties all of this together is Sebastian’s ongoing struggle with his ex-wife, also a lawyer, who is determined to keep him away from his son. He loves his son and is frustrated by the lack of time he has to spend with him. And yet, he can’t entirely blame the boy’s mother for wanting to keep him away from the more dangerous aspects of Sebastian’s life.
While this book is written in a different style than Grisham's other books, it contains much of the same legal intrigue that has made him such a popular author. So check it out and see what you think.
