Celtic Calligraphy: Calligraphy, Knotwork and Illumination by Kerry Richardson

A new book to the library is Celtic Calligraphy by Kerry Richardson, an artist from Ireland who is trying to bring back the ancient art of Celtic Calligraphy and Knot Work. Celtic Calligraphy is simply basic writing with embellishments. Celtic Knot Work looks like ropes and knots that interweave on a page.

This book has basic Celtic Calligraphy writing and letter formation but it has so much more. It has Celtic Knot Work and intricate floral embellishments. She even teaches how to shade your knot work for added depth and contrast. That sounds hard but the author breaks it down into progressive steps so that with a little effort you get better and better.

First, you learn to draw the letters. I used a simple highlighter with a wedge tip. At first I was a little wobbly but with practice I got better. Next , she shows you how to do the knot work. This is even more difficult but again, she breaks it down into simpler steps you can repeat and practice. I must say that my knot work still needs improvement but it has been fun practicing and getting better.

Later, she teaches you how to paint or shade the letters providing color interest. This makes your knot work really come alive. And Last, she shows you how to embellish your knot work with stems, leaves, flowers and even bees and butterflies. What you end up with is a very elaborate piece that you will not believe you did yourself.

If this book interests you, feel free to request and check it out. We'll be back next Wednesday with a different Staff Pick.
