For this week's Mango Monday we will present Romanian.

Romanian is a language spoken by 24 million speakers in Romania and Moldova. It is part of the Romance language family that includes Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. It may not seem related at first, but that is because the language has borrowed vocabulary from the Slavic languages of Romania's geographical neighbors. The language is written with a Latin script that includes a few extra letters than the 26 used in English, but the writing is basically phonetic (sounds as written), which is great for new learners.

For tourists and language learners, Mango has this enticement:

Oh, Romania; you’re romance epitomized. The language itself captures the deep beauty and culture of the country’s diverse range of attractions; rich in history and ever-evolving to contemporary times. Sail along the Danube River straight to the shores of the Black Sea, where the fine sand beaches offer hours of sun-soaked relaxation with stunning views. Explore medieval towns and traditional villages; visiting stunning fortresses, historic castles, and bustling villages blissfully oblivious to the demands of modern times. Spend your days in Bucharest indulging in fine wines and enjoying authentic Romanian cuisine like ghiveci, mititei, and Papanaşi for dessert.

All conversational languages give you different language skills and situations to practice (Making Friends, Shopping, etc). Here is the first dialogue about food and drink you can learn from Unit 4: Chapter 17: Let's Eat.

  • May I help you? Vă pot ajuta?
  • I would like to order sarmale. Aș dori să comand sarmale.
  • Can I bring you something to drink? Vă aduc ceva de băut?
  • A pint of beer and a glass of water. O halbă de bere și un pahar de apă.
  • No ice please. Fără gheață, vă rog.
  • And I'll have some bread, too. Și aș dori și niște pâine.

Romanian is available through both Mango Languages and Pronunciator. Each language product has different interfaces, and some will work better for you depending on what you want to get out of your language experience. Don't forget to take advantage of each product's mobile apps for language learning on the go!

Next Monday we will be back with a new language you can teach yourself with resources from your library.
