The Last Man on Earth [DVD] starring Vincent Price

This is a review of an older classic movie. The Last Man on Earth is a DVD starring Vincent Price. Made in 1964, it is based on the novel by Richard Mathieson 'I am Legend'. A second movie was based on this same novel (Omega Man with Charleton Heston) which is part of the same genre. It was one of the movies that led to a decades long discussion about zombies that has not yet been finished. Night of the Living Dead is also based on this same novel but The Last Man on Earth is the first of the series.

A youngish Vincent Price plays the part of a scientist who is the sole survivor of a global pandemic. This movie is true to the novel and expresses the idea of the rest of mankind as vampire-like zombies who are suffering. Their suffering is also a form of torment for Price. His wife and daughter have been taken by the plague as well as his fellow scientists.

This movie is in black and white which requires the actors to pull their weight of the story rather than relying on cinematics. Price does an excellent job with both sobs of grief and almost heinous laughter at times.

All is not lost. There is a solution. The surprise solution is remarkable and worth watching for the whole story. See your friendly library personnel for assistance in obtaining this movie.
